Jennifer is a mental health therapist intern from Colombia currently working on her master’s degree in counseling at VCU. As an international student for many years, her experience as an immigrant has been very diverse and authentic. Jennifer believes that people are the experts of their own lives and stories. She will be helping clients in their journey of self-exploration to increase self-awareness and self-understanding and, in this way, find solutions to any challenges they face.

Jennifer believes therapy should be pure and simple: a conversation between two people with an immense focus on the client-therapist relationship. Making the client comfortable and understood through active listening, reflection of feeling, accurate empathic understanding, and unconditional positive regard, she believes that people are more motivated to change by their own ideas instead of other people telling them what to do or think. Depending on the client’s situation, some of the interventions she likes to use are motivational interviewing, CBT, and family systems. Jennifer realizes that each client is unique, and based on this, no one theory or intervention would help everyone; a client-centered model would help her adapt her therapy to each client’s needs in the different therapy moments.

  • Hello! My name is Jennifer Orozco and I’m an international student from Colombia. I came to the United States more than 10 years ago. As an international student for many years, I continued getting involved in my community, learning about the immigration laws and other support sources for us in the city. I understand that we all have unique journeys and experiences. I’m always open to learn and research new ways to help people and I’m absolutely inspired to help my community.

    My favorites:

    - Exercising!! I love lifting weights and the gym.

    - Eating healthy, nutritious food. I love cooking new, healthy recipes.

    - Dancing. I came from the capital of the salsa, Cali, Colombia. I love dancing salsa, bachata, merengue, and more.

    - Tennis. I love playing tennis with my brother during the weekends.

    - My dogs, Ragnar and Max. I love spending time with them.

    - My family. I don’t have a lot of family in the US, but I’m very family oriented. Every free time I have, I try to share it with them.
